 Christianity (n.)

• religion founded on the teachings, person and life of Jesus

Originating in Judea and spreading first in the Middle East, its principal founder was Paul of Tarsus. With the edict of Milan (313), Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire, under Constantine I.

It is doubtful whether the man named Jesus ever existed historically. If he did exist, we know almost nothing about his life -- since the gospels are very unreliable sources -- except that he was one of the many preachers and so-called prophets who proliferated during that era.  Christmas (n.)

• festival celebrated by Christians on December 25^th as the birth of Jesus Christ

In fact, the date of this celebration and the customs surrounding it are not necessarily Christian:

• The ancient Romans celebrated the Saturnalia starting on December 17 and lasting for several days.
• The 25^th of December was celebrated as the birthdate of the god Mithras. Mithraism, a religion of Persian origin, was widespread in the ancient Roman world and a competitor of Christianity.
• Various cultures celebrated the winter solstice which occurs in last December.
• The "Christmas" tree is in fact a Celtic tradition which predates Christianity.
• The French word Noël, which is well known in English as part of Christmas folklore, is probably related to words meaning either "birth" (i.e. the birth of Mithras or of the sun) or "new".
• Finally, not only is the birthdate of Jesus unknown, "Jesus" may never even have existed. Some biblical scholars conclude that he is completely mythological. Even those who think he existed recognize that we know almost nothing about him, all the gospels being essentially fictional narratives written long after the events they purport to relate.

Thus, when believers lament that "Christ" has been removed from "Christmas", they are simply indulging in ahistorical Christian propaganda. For a hilarious commentary on the so-called "War on Christmas", see Steven Colbert's video The 2010 Blitzkrieg on Grinchitude.

 CLARKE, Arthur C.

Arthur C. Clarke has written more than sixty books and is especially well-known for the screenplay of the celebrated film "2001: A Space Odyssey" which he co-wrote with Stanley Kubrick. He is also the inventor of the concept of geostationary satellite communication.

• belief in the literal interpretation of the account of the creation of the universe and of all living things as related in a text considered to be sacred, such as the Bible
  This is sometimes referred to as "young-earth creationism" or "biblical literalism".
• more generally, any belief that the universe, regardless of its age, was originally created by some intelligent agent, usually called "God"

Interpreted according to its more general meaning, creationism is a necessary consequence of theism.
